Grayscale keeps every shade between black and white, so colored areas turn into grays. Black and white uses only two colors: each dot is either black or white. That is what printers, fax machines and many form submissions mean by a black and white copy.

Most tools called "black and white" actually output grayscale. This tool uses a threshold: anything darker than the slider setting becomes black, everything else becomes white. There is no gray left in the file.

The default works for most documents. If thin text breaks up, move the slider toward Darker. If a colored or gray background turns into black blocks, move it toward Lighter.
